Thank you for adding an Em&M Pomeranian to your family!! Important information about your puppy (most of this is also found in my contract):
- He/She has been free fed while with me. I suggest you do the same for a few days while your puppy is adjusting. You can put 1/3-1/2 cup of food down and let them eat what they want for about 15 minutes. Then measure what they have eaten after several feedings and put that down. I suggest feeding 3x a day minimally and of course more often if he/she is not eating a lot during the first few days. I have provided Nutrical but having this on hand is a good idea as if for some reason the appetite goes down this can replace a meal and keep the blood sugar stable.
- Your puppy has been using a litterbox. I use a sterilite box (23”x16”x6”) with wood burning pellets as the litter. This is started at 4 wks of age. The wood pellets are safe because when they get wet they turn to sawdust therefore are digestible. Of course wood pellets are seasonal so if you cant get them you can also use horse pellets or feline pine cat litter. I do not recommend using Yesterday’s News as it is not the same material. I cannot be sure this will be digestible and could cause a blockage. If you do not want to continue litter training you should not introduce it once your puppy is home. You can switch to puppy pads if desired but if you’re looking to completely housebreak the puppy I would not introduce either of these options. When I keep/add a new puppy they use the litterbox in a playpen (Northstates is the brand I use) until around 6-7 months of age (or longer depending on size) & then I transition to crate training. Your puppy can be expected to hold his urine/bowels for 1 hour per month of age. So a 3 month old puppy can hold it for 3 hours. They will typically have a BM within 1 hr of eating. When you are not able to watch your puppy fully, they can be placed in their playpen or crate for safety and to avoid accidents (more info about this is in my contract).
- When your puppy is with me, we have supervised playtimes in an area thats easy to clean and has little dangers. Not like letting your puppy have run of the house. Please keep that in mind when you get him home as they like to chew cords, shoes, kids’ toys etc. I do my best not to allow that but have multiples to watch so giving them a designated area is easier for me (esp with 3 small children).
- Some lose stool is not a surprise since stress can cause this but having a stool sample checked when your baby goes to the vet is recommended. You can use a 50/50 mix of plain yogurt and pure canned pumpkin to help firm up the stool. Don’t give too many new things all at once as that can also upset the tummy. I don’t vary from my dog food a whole lot as having multiple dogs with diarrhea is not something I like to chance :) I use cheerios for treats or other bland options. My dogs/puppies also get the yogurt/pumpkin frozen as treats esp when weaning from mom. They really like it that way! (more info about this is also in my contract). Make sure when giving anything (Benadryl, pepto, peanut butter etc) to check the ingredients for xylitol. This is toxic to dogs and causes issues with the blood sugar.
- Your puppy has had at least 1 puppy shot while in my care and will not be due for a booster until 1 month after the first shot. Do NOT let your vet pressure you into giving it early or doing more than one vaccine at a time. Always separate the shots by at least 2 wks if possible. And DO NOT let them give LEPTO to a puppy under 4# if they feel it is absolutely necessary to give. It is the most common part of the vaccine to cause reactions. I always pretreat every puppy I vaccinate with Benadryl 30 min prior to the vaccine (1mg/# dosage). And whenever possible I suggest titering instead of continued vaccination on a very small puppy/dog.
- If you need ANYTHING please do not hesitate to contact me. I am here for the life of my puppy and try to offer sound advise. No one likes to run to the vet for every little thing but please do remember I am not a vet. I do have tons of experience with the breed but I may suggest a vet visit if I don’t know the answer to something. You can contact me day or night and if I am available I will help the best I can. Thank you again for being a part of my family and I look forward to watching your baby grow!
